The quick answer

Roll labels are supplied on a continuous liner wound around a core; sheet labels are supplied on flat sheets. A roll can suit compatible application equipment or hand use. Sheets can suit hand application and small, grouped layouts. The application process, quantities and equipment decide the fit.

Understand the format

Start with the application process

By hand: either format can work. Consider where labels are stored, how operators peel them and whether different designs need to stay grouped.

By machine: a compatible roll format is common, but the applicator determines core diameter, maximum roll diameter, unwind direction and spacing. Confirm those details with the machine documentation or operator.

Sheets: describe the complete sheet size, labels per sheet and arrangement. If sheets will pass through equipment, confirm compatibility with the equipment and the material.

What your team receives

Continuous liner

Roll labels

Labels follow one another on a liner wound around a core. Agree the label position, gap and unwind direction for the application method.

  • Confirm the core diameter and maximum outside roll diameter in mm.
  • Specify labels per roll and the number of rolls, if required.
  • Ask about the starting edge and unwind with your applicator.

Flat backing

Sheet labels

Labels are arranged on individual sheets of liner. The sheet can carry one or several designs, subject to the approved layout.

  • Confirm sheet width and height in mm.
  • Specify labels per sheet, number of sheets and total labels.
  • Discuss layout, spacing and grouping of different designs.

Keep units clear

Count labels, rolls and sheets separately

Roll example

4 rolls × 500 labels per roll = 2,000 labels.

Confirm the roll dimensions and the quantity of each design separately.

Sheet example

100 sheets × 20 labels per sheet = 2,000 labels.

If a sheet combines designs, list how many of each design appear on it.

Changes and reorders

Tell us the preferred packaging unit and whether the same quantities per roll or sheet are needed on a reorder.

Prepare a request

What to send with your artwork

  • Finished label width and height in mm, with the artwork and cut line.
  • Total labels, number of designs, and quantities per design.
  • For rolls: desired labels per roll, number of rolls, core diameter and maximum roll diameter in mm, plus unwind direction.
  • For sheets: sheet dimensions in mm, labels per sheet, number of sheets, and the intended arrangement.
  • Machine model or operator requirements, or tell us that labels will be applied by hand.
  • Container, storage and exposure conditions so the material and adhesive can be discussed.
